Legendary Hungarian football coach György Mezey dies at age 84

Dr. György Mezey — master coach, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from both the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) and the Association of Hungarian Sports Journalists, and former head coach of the Hungarian national football team — has passed away at the age of 84.

During his tenure, he led Hungary in 35 matches and guided the team to qualification for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, the last occasion the Hungarian national side appeared in the tournament.

Beyond his coaching career, Dr. Mezey headed Hungary’s coach education program and frequently contributed to major international competitions at the invitation of FIFA and UEFA, serving as a highly respected member of their technical analysis teams.

A prolific author of professional books and publications, Dr. Mezey was also named International Coach of the Year by World Soccer magazine in 1985.
