In honor of the legendary footballer Pele, the Brazilian club Santos will retire the number 10.
One of the best football players of all time wore that jersey while playing for Santos from 1956 to 1974.
On the occasion of his death, Santos declared seven days of mourning.
“We will propose it to the board of directors.” There is a procedure, and it is necessary for the board members to meet and approve it. In the meantime, we will temporarily cancel the use of jersey number 10 by administrative act in January, hoping that our board will turn that decision into a permanent solution. There was already such an initiative, but many thought that Pele could be honored in a better way by continuing to use his “ten,” said the president of Santos, Andres Rueda.
The Brazilian died at the age of 83 after a long struggle with a serious illness.
