Corruption case against Qala Saints FC and two players begins

The goalkeeper of Żebbuġ Rovers Leonard Camilleri began to face proceedings before the Committee of Discipline and Ethics of the Control Board of the Maltese Football Association, while Qala Saints FC and the player Manuel Xerri should be brought before the board on Thursday.

Camilleri appeared before the board on Wednesday assisted by his lawyer Frank Anthony Tabone. However, the football club and its player asked for the adjournment as their lawyer, Adrian Delia, was not available that day.

In addition to these proceedings, criminal charges were brought against Camilleri and Xerri, who will appear before the Magistrates’ Court in October where they will be accused of corruption in sport.

The long awaited match between Qala Saints and Nadur Youngsters in the First Division championship was played in March and ended in a 1-1 draw.

Evidence, in the form of recorded conversations, has been provided in relation to this case.

Both the Police and the integrity department of the Maltese Football Association have launched separate investigations into this matter.
