Genoa have parted ways with head coach Alberto Gilardino following a disappointing start to the season that leaves the club teetering near the relegation zone. Sitting 17th with just two wins in their first 12 matches, the Rossoblù opted for a change in leadership to spark a turnaround.
Gilardino, 42, took charge in December 2022 after a stint with Genoa’s Under-19 team, guiding the club to a respectable 11th-place finish last season. However, the World Cup-winning striker and former Genoa player failed to replicate that success in his second campaign, as the team struggled with inconsistent performances.
Reports suggest Genoa are eyeing Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal and France midfielder, as a potential replacement. Vieira, 48, has managerial experience in the Premier League and Ligue 1 and is currently unattached after leaving Strasbourg in July.
Genoa’s decision underscores the urgency of their fight for survival in Serie A. The next appointment will be crucial as the club seeks to stabilize and avoid a damaging relegation battle.
