Former Floriana FC owner Stephen Vaughan Snr passes away aged 62

Stephen Vaughan Snr, a well-known figure in British and Maltese football circles, has passed away at the age of 62. His death was confirmed by his son and business partner, Stephen Vaughan Jr, who paid tribute to him as his “hero” and lifelong inspiration.

Vaughan Snr leaves behind a legacy shaped by his involvement in multiple football and rugby clubs across the UK and Malta. Over the years, he held high-profile roles as majority stakeholder at Chester City, Barrow AFC, and rugby league side Widnes Vikings. However, he is perhaps best known locally for his time at Floriana FC, one of Malta’s most historic football clubs.

In 2012, following his move to Malta, Vaughan Snr took over the reins at Floriana FC, marking a new chapter in the club’s history. Under his ownership, he appointed his son, Stephen Vaughan Jr, as chairman. The pair sought to professionalise the club’s operations and bring a fresh sense of ambition to the Maltese Premier League side.

Their influence helped restore stability and competitiveness at Floriana during a transitional period, with the club going on to develop its youth setup and strengthen its squad under their leadership. Though Vaughan Sr’s tenure was eventually succeeded by other investors, his role in reshaping Floriana’s modern era remains notable.

Beyond Malta, Vaughan Snr had decades of involvement in the sporting world. He took over Barrow AFC in 1995 and was also involved in Chester City, a club close to his roots. His career extended into rugby league through his time with Widnes Vikings and boxing, where he was known for mentoring young fighters. Former professional boxer Derry Mathews described Vaughan as his “first-ever manager” and remembered him fondly for his motivational team talks.

In later years, Vaughan and his son were also linked to a takeover of Bangor City FC in Wales, where Vaughan Jr briefly served as player-manager.

Stephen Vaughan Snr’s passing marks the end of a long and eventful journey through British and Maltese sport. His influence was felt not only in boardrooms and dressing rooms but also in the lives of those he mentored and supported throughout his career.

Malta Sport joins the football community in mourning his loss and extends its sincerest condolences to Stephen Vaughan Jr and the entire Vaughan family.
