In a ceremony held in the La Chinita neighborhood, near the Daymán Hot Springs, the Uruguayan city of Salto, home to 115,000 residents near the eastern border with Argentina, paid tribute to its most distinguished athletes. As of today, two local streets have been named after Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani.
The news was reported by the Uruguayan daily El País, which noted that the initiative, approved by the Salto departmental council, also honored other prominent local sports figures, including footballer Pedro Virgilio Rocha, basketball players Omar “Chumbo” Arrestia and Nicolás Mazzarino (who also played in Italy for Reggio Calabria and Cantù), jockey Irineo Leguisamo, and football coach Aníbal “Maño” Ruiz.
During the event, attended by former athlete and Uruguayan Olympic flag bearer Mónica Falcioni, a new square named “Land of Champions” was also inaugurated. A proposal was made to name Salto International Airport after Edinson Cavani.
