Simonsen was again the hero for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1979 UEFA Cup Final against Yugoslavia’s Red Star Belgrade by scoring a penalty in the 18th minute for a 2-1 aggregate.

Between these two UEFA Cup Finals, Simonsen also played in the 1977 European Cup Final against Liverpool and scored a temporary equaliser, however, Bob Paisley’s strong outfit emerged 3-1 winners.

Simonsen tasted further European success with Spanish giants Barcelona
by scoring the first goal in a 2-1 win against Belgian side Standard Liege in the 1982 Cup Winners’ Cup Final, and he is the only player in football history to have scored in the European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup Finals.
