Filipe Luis sacked by Flamengo after 8-0 win

Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has been sacked as manager of Flamengo, just hours after the Brazilian club won 8-0 to reach the Campeonato Carioca final.

Luis, 40, won seven trophies in 100 games since taking over in September 2024, averaging a trophy every 14 matches. He led Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2025, becoming one of the few people to win the tournament both as a player and a coach.

Despite Flamengo’s huge win over Madureira, the club announced Luis’ dismissal shortly after midnight local time. Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares also left with him. The club thanked him for his contributions and wished him luck in the future.

Under Luis, Flamengo also won Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, the Fifa Challenger Cup, and the Fifa Derby of the Americas. The team reached the last 16 of last summer’s Fifa Club World Cup, losing 4-2 to Bayern Munich after topping their group, which included Chelsea.

This season, Flamengo are 11th in the league, with one win, one draw, and one loss from their first three matches, six points behind leaders Palmeiras with a game in hand.
