In a stunning display, Everton delivered a resounding 5-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, propelling themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Entering the match on the back of a seven-game winless streak, the Toffees wasted no time in making an impact as Abdoulaye Doucoure opened the scoring within 34 seconds. The midfielder doubled his tally for the season in the 29th minute, calmly finishing Dwight McNeil’s precise cross.
Brighton’s first half went from bad to worse when Jason Steele unintentionally deflected the ball into his own net, compounding their misery. Despite the hosts’ attempts to mount a comeback in the second half, Everton swiftly extended their lead through McNeil, extinguishing any hopes of a positive result for the Seagulls. Alexis Mac Allister managed to pull one back for Brighton, but Everton sealed their victory with a fifth goal in stoppage time, courtesy of McNeil’s superb strike to complete his outstanding individual performance.
The result sees Everton climb to 16th place in the league standings, while Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton side remains in seventh position, trailing sixth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by two points, despite having played two additional matches.
The visitors wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with Doucoure finding the back of the net in the opening minute, courtesy of an excellent assist from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Employing a counter-attacking strategy, Everton sat deep and capitalized on their opportunities. McNeil’s breakaway run from their own half led to Doucoure’s second goal, as he expertly volleyed the ball into the net, achieving a brace for the second time in his career.
The traveling Toffee supporters were elated, and their joy continued when McNeil’s cut-back inadvertently deflected off Steele and into the net, adding a third goal for the Toffees just before halftime.
Brighton sought to mount a response in the second half, with Evan Ferguson leading the charge. Pascal Gross delivered a dangerous cross that Ferguson directed towards goal, forcing Jordan Pickford to make a save, with the ball rebounding off the post. Pickford denied the Republic of Ireland international once again, tipping his powerful left-footed strike onto the crossbar moments later.
Mac Allister’s glancing header from the ensuing corner hit the post, leaving Brighton to rue their missed opportunities. The inspired Pickford continued to frustrate the hosts, and Everton capitalized on the counter, with McNeil deceiving Lewis Dunk and Steele with skillful play before calmly slotting the ball into an empty net for their fourth goal.
Although Mac Allister found a late consolation goal for Brighton, Everton had the last word, as McNeil unleashed a thunderous strike past Steele in stoppage time, securing Everton’s second away victory of the Premier League season.
