Chelsea’s struggles under Enzo Maresca continued as they scraped a 2-2 draw against an injury-hit Bournemouth side at Stamford Bridge, thanks to a stoppage-time free-kick from Reece James. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Chelsea’s profligacy and defensive lapses nearly cost them all three points.
Chelsea began the match with intent, creating chances early on. Enzo Fernández slipped at a crucial moment when through on goal, while Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer failed to capitalise on opportunities. Palmer eventually broke the deadlock, combining with Nicolas Jackson, whose sharp turn and confident finish gave Chelsea the lead.
Despite their depleted squad—fielding just 12 senior players—Bournemouth responded with resilience. Manager Andoni Iraola was forced to make an early substitution when James Hill went off injured, further straining their resources. Justin Kluivert’s introduction moved captain Lewis Cook into an emergency full-back role.
Bournemouth found a way back into the game through their spirited play. Kluivert hit the post, but their pressure paid off as Antoine Semenyo capitalised on Chelsea’s defensive frailty to put the visitors ahead in the second half.
Chelsea, meanwhile, squandered multiple chances, with Noni Madueke and Jackson both missing opportunities to restore parity. Jackson struck the post during a swift counterattack, epitomising Chelsea’s lack of clinical edge.
Maresca brought on Christopher Nkunku in the latter stages, but it was Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, who salvaged the game. In stoppage time, James curled a superb free-kick past Bournemouth’s keeper, ensuring his side avoided a shock defeat.
