Manchester United suffered their fifth league defeat in the same month for the first time since September 1962, losing 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. They remain in 14th place in the Premier League table.
Ruben Amorim’s start as Manchester United manager is now over, following a tough record of five losses in his first 10 matches. The Red Devils were on course for their sixth defeat when Alexander Isak scored from a cross by Lewis Hall just four minutes into the match. Isak became the second Newcastle player to score in six consecutive Premier League games, matching Papiss Cissé’s record from 2012.

Newcastle looked to make the most of their early lead with further chances from Joelinton and Anthony Gordon, before Joelinton made it 2-0. Gordon set him up, and Joelinton powered his header past André Onana. Isak thought he had added a third when Fabian Schär’s shot deflected into his path, but the assistant referee ruled it offside. Soon after, Sandro Tonali’s close-range shot hit the post in what was a difficult first half for United. However, Rasmus Højlund gave United a glimmer of hope when his angled shot just missed the post, and Casemiro’s effort went wide just before half-time.
United came out more determined after the break, and Harry Maguire almost pulled one back with a header from Diogo Dalot’s cross, but it hit the post. Leny Yoro also came close with a header from a Christian Eriksen corner, but there was little sustained pressure, and Newcastle comfortably saw out the game.
The damage had already been done in the first half, as Newcastle secured their fourth consecutive win in the Premier League, without conceding a goal, for the first time since April 2012. They moved up to fifth place, just three points behind the top four, and achieved only their second-ever Premier League win at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, United suffered their third consecutive home defeat, a run they haven’t experienced since December 1978 to February 1979, leaving them with a difficult challenge ahead against their rivals, Liverpool.
