Leicester’s survival hopes dented as Brentford inflict heavy defeat

Leicester City’s fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League suffered a crushing blow as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Brentford at the King Power Stadium on Friday night.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side had a golden opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone with a win. Still, instead, they endured another humbling night, leaving them two points adrift of safety. The loss extends their dreadful run of form, now losing 10 of their last 11 league games.

The match began with early promise for Leicester, who created three chances in the opening minutes. However, Brentford’s ruthlessness on the counter-attack soon took control, leaving the Foxes reeling.

Yoane Wissa opened the scoring in the 17th minute, capitalising on Mikkel Damsgaard’s clever pass to beat Mads Hermansen with a low strike. Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead in the 27th minute, cutting inside from the right before curling a brilliant effort into the far corner. Christian Norgaard effectively ended the contest after 32 minutes, heading home from Mbeumo’s pinpoint free-kick.

With the score at 3-0 inside the first half-hour, some Leicester fans headed for the exits early, unable to bear another dismal performance. Those who remained saw Kristoffer Ajer strike the post before Fabio Carvalho completed the rout in the 89th minute, calmly finishing after another assist from Mbeumo.

Leicester’s sixth consecutive home defeat without scoring saw them enter the record books for all the wrong reasons—becoming the first team in English top-flight history to achieve this unwanted feat.

Van Nistelrooy: “A Huge Step Back”

Speaking after the match, a disappointed Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the severity of the situation.

“You have to acknowledge it’s a huge step back. There was hope after recent performances, the beginning of the game was hopeful with three chances. But after that, we were never in the game again. At half-time, the game was done. Everyone is going home gutted with the loss and disappointed with the levels we showed.”

The Dutchman also admitted that Leicester had handed their relegation rivals a major boost:

“We know we gave the other teams above us and below us a chance to gain points and momentum. If we don’t start picking up points, it can become really difficult really quickly.”

Leicester are now in severe danger of an immediate return to the Championship, with only 12 games remaining to salvage their top-flight status. The club’s managerial instability has contributed to their struggles, with Enzo Maresca’s departure to Chelsea last summer leaving a void that has yet to be filled effectively.

Steve Cooper lasted just five months, and Van Nistelrooy, who took charge in November, has failed to inspire a turnaround. Leicester have won just four of their 26 league games this season, with only two victories in 15 matches under their current manager.

For Brentford, the victory lifts them to 10th place, with their counter-attacking brilliance proving too much for Leicester.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank will be delighted with his team’s performance as they extended their strong run of form and widened the gap between themselves and the relegation battle.

The pressure is now firmly on Van Nistelrooy to find solutions before it’s too late. With 12 games left, Leicester must urgently turn their form around to avoid an unthinkable relegation.

Their next fixture will be crucial a chance to show some fight and reverse their downward spiral. However, based on their current form, it will take more than just hope to avoid a disastrous end to the season.
