After Jürgen Klopp’s departure, 2024 was expected to be a tough year for Liverpool, but Arne Slot has stepped in and built on Klopp’s work, leading the team to the top of the Premier League. With Klopp’s help, Slot saw Liverpool finish 2024 with 92 Premier League goals, their second-most ever in a single season.
Five of those goals came against their biggest rivals, Manchester United, including a 3-0 win at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Slot is now aiming to become only the second Liverpool manager to beat United twice in his first season, matching George Kay’s feat from 1936/37.
United are struggling, with just one goal in their last nine visits to Anfield and no wins. Their recent form is poor, having lost their last three Premier League games without scoring, leaving them in the bottom half of the table.
Manager Ruben Amorim is at risk of overseeing United’s worst league run in decades, potentially losing four consecutive games without scoring, something they haven’t done since April 1909. United conceded 18 goals in December, their worst defensive month since 1964.
Mohamed Salah has been in sensational form with 21 direct goal contributions in his last 12 games against United. United’s best hope may lie with Amad Diallo, who scored the winning goal in their last victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup last season.
Liverpool have won 11 of their last 15 home games by at least two goals.
