Gunners celebrate 500th match at the Emirates by beating Manchester United

Arsenal celebrated their 500th match at the Emirates Stadium with a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester United, securing their fourth consecutive Premier League victory against the Red Devils for the first time in history.

After a dominant 4-0 win over Everton, Ruben Amorim made six surprising changes to his starting lineup, while Arsenal aimed for their fourth straight win. The Gunners almost took the lead early when Gabriel Martinelli scored after André Onana’s poor clearance, but the goal was ruled offside. Thomas Partey then missed a great chance to score with a header from a corner.

United gradually grew into the game and managed to keep possession, but they never threatened Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, and failed to make a touch inside the box in the first 30 minutes. Arsenal’s best chances came from set pieces, with Martinelli’s shot just going over the bar after he pounced on a loose ball.

In the second half, Arsenal started with more energy, and their persistent threat from set pieces paid off. Just 10 minutes after the break, Declan Rice’s corner was flicked in at the near post by Jurrien Timber, marking Arsenal’s 21st goal from a corner since last season. Amorim responded with a triple substitution, including Leny Yoro, who made his competitive debut for United.

Arsenal’s set-piece work almost resulted in another goal when Manuel Ugarte cleared a header off the line after Joshua Zirkzee nearly scored an own goal. United’s first effort on target came in the 67th minute when Raya made a superb save to deny Matthijs de Ligt. However, Arsenal doubled their lead from another corner. Bukayo Saka’s delivery was headed back into the box by Partey and eventually crossed the line off William Saliba.

Despite Kai Havertz missing a chance to make it 3-0, Arsenal comfortably saw out the final stages with little threat from United. This defeat marked Ruben Amorim’s first loss as United’s manager, but he will have a chance to bounce back when they face Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Meanwhile, Arsenal moved closer to league leaders Liverpool, reducing the gap to seven points and extending their unbeaten home run to 13 games in all competitions.
