West Ham United has officially appointed Graham Potter as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract, following the departure of Julen Lopetegui.
Potter, 49, returns to Premier League management after his tenure at Chelsea, which concluded in April 2023. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he managed 31 games, securing 12 wins. Before Chelsea, Potter earned acclaim for his work at Brighton & Hove Albion, guiding them to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.
Upon his appointment, Potter stated, “It was important to me that I waited until a job came along that I felt was right for me, and equally that I was the right fit for the club I am joining.” He emphasized shared values with the club’s leadership, focusing on hard work and high energy to build a foundation for success.
West Ham United currently sits 14th in the Premier League, seven points above the relegation zone. The club’s recent form includes heavy defeats, leading to Lopetegui’s dismissal after just six months in charge. Potter’s immediate challenge will be to stabilize the team’s performance and steer them away from relegation threats.
His first match at the helm is scheduled for Friday, January 10, 2025, in an FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa. The fixture presents an opportunity for Potter to make a positive start and begin implementing his tactical philosophy.
