Maltese international James Carragher has undergone knee surgery following an injury sustained in Wigan Athletic’s 2–0 defeat to Leyton Orient on Saturday.
The 22-year-old centre-half, who made his Malta debut in March against Finland, was forced off during the League One clash at Brisbane Road. Sharing an update from his hospital bed on Instagram, Carragher described the past couple of days as a “crazy 48 hours” and said: “Pleased to have had the best surgeon sort me out and be back in no time, thanks for all the messages.”
Messages of support quickly followed from across the football community, including former Wigan and Tranmere midfielder Max Power, ex-Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay and former Liverpool Women’s player Missy Bo Kearns. Boxer Stephen Smith and social media personality StillRyan also sent their well wishes.
Carragher, who qualifies for Malta through his grandmother Paula Carragher and great-grandfather Paul Vassallo, has enjoyed a landmark year on the international stage. His parents, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and wife Nicola, travelled to watch his debut in the narrow loss to Finland before joining family celebrations ahead of Malta’s Nations League fixture against Poland.
While Wigan have yet to confirm a recovery timescale, the defender’s upbeat message suggests he is targeting a swift return to action for both club and country.
