The curtain will be raised on the European club season this Wednesday when Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur meet in Udine for the UEFA Super Cup.
Both sides overcame adversity during the 2024-25 campaign to secure European silverware, PSG lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time in their history, and Spurs ending a 17-year drought for major honours by winning the Europa League.
PSG aiming to build on historic season
Luis Enrique’s side completed a historic quadruple last term, sweeping Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Trophee des Champions, and in emphatic fashion the Champions League, defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. That victory ended decades of European frustration for the Parisians.
The only blemish came in the Club World Cup final, where Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners. PSG return to competitive action with minimal pre-season preparation, having only wrapped up their last campaign weeks ago.
Spurs looking for stability under new management
Tottenham’s Europa League triumph was not enough to save Ange Postecoglou from the sack after a disappointing 17th-place Premier League finish. New manager Thomas Frank has overseen an unbeaten pre-season until a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
This will be Spurs’ first appearance in the Super Cup, and they will be without key players including James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Radu Dragusin.
