Sunderland dramatically booked their place in the Championship playoff final after a thrilling 1-1 draw against Coventry City on Tuesday night secured a 3-2 aggregate victory. Daniel Ballard was the hero, heading home in the 123rd minute to send the Stadium of Light into raptures and seal the Black Cats’ place at Wembley.

Holding a slender 2-1 advantage from Friday’s first leg, Sunderland knew the tie was far from over. Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, delivered a strong performance and equalised on aggregate 15 minutes from time when Ephron Mason-Clark fired a low shot past the keeper after beating his marker.
Despite being outplayed for much of the match, Sunderland found a second wind in extra time. Just as the game appeared to be heading to penalties, Enzo Le Fée whipped in a dangerous corner which Ballard met with a towering header, crashing it into the net and sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

It marks a dramatic turnaround for Regis Le Bris’ side, who had gone winless in their final six games of the regular season. Memories of their 2022–23 playoff heartbreak — when they surrendered a 2-1 first-leg lead to Luton Town and crashed out after a 2-0 defeat in the return — were banished in a moment of pure euphoria.

Sunderland will now face Sheffield United in the final at Wembley on May 24, with both sides dreaming of a return to the Premier League. The Black Cats have been absent from the top flight since 2017, but with momentum on their side, they’ll head to London believing this could finally be their year.
