Alba Berlin coach, Israel Gonzalez, should extend his contract with the German team, well-informed BasketNews sources report.
Both sides are negotiating the details of the agreement. The contract should be for at least two years, according to sources.
Gonzalez signed a one-year contract and took over Alba last summer when longtime head coach Aito Garcia Reneses left the position.
He has been active as a professional basketball coach for 18 years. He started his career in 2004 with Cantabria Baloncesto as an assistant and took over the position of head coach in December 2007.
Gran Canaria was the next long-term stop for the 47-year-old Spanish coach (2009-17). He worked there as an assistant. Gonzalez and Reneses crossed paths in the 2014-15 season. Then Reneses became the head coach of the club from the Canary Islands. After two seasons in which the team finished fifth and eighth at the Spanish ACB, they both moved to Berlin.
Israel is a two-time German League champion (2020, 2021) and a German Cup winner (2020) as an assistant and a German Cup winner as head coach this season. He brought Alba to the tenth position in the regular season of the Euroleague with 12 victories and 16 defeats. Alba is second in the German league with 24 wins and 6 losses.
