FIFA has marked exactly one year to go until the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicks off on Thursday, 11 June 2026 in Mexico City. This tournament will be the biggest and most inclusive World Cup ever, with 48 national teams competing across Canada, Mexico, and the United States – the first time the tournament will be hosted in three countries.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the event will be more than just a football competition, calling it a global celebration of unity and passion. Over 6.5 million fans are expected to attend matches in 16 host cities.
As part of the countdown, each city will unveil a countdown clock in a well-known local spot. Celebrations and community events will also be held, along with videos showcasing local celebrities and what makes each host city special.
So far, 13 teams have already qualified for the tournament. Canada, Mexico, and the USA are in as hosts. They’re joined by Argentina, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Ecuador, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. The remaining 35 teams will qualify by March 2026, and the group stage draw will take place in December 2025.
FIFA is also preparing for the new FIFA Club World Cup, which starts this weekend in Miami and features 32 top clubs from around the world.
