Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will miss the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States after being denied a visa due to a past criminal offence.
The club confirmed on Thursday that Costa, who was expected to travel on Wednesday night, could not obtain the necessary visa. In 2023, he accepted a probation sentence in Argentina related to an aggravated robbery charge dating back to 2018. U.S. authorities determined that he is still serving that sentence, making him ineligible for entry under current visa rules.
The decision reflects strict U.S. policies regarding criminal records, and no immediate comment was available from the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires.
Boca Juniors begin their Club World Cup campaign on Monday in Miami against Portuguese side Benfica.
