Sliema W…………..2

Sliema Wanderers emerged victorious in the Summer Cup, an event organized by the Malta FA. They secured a 2-1 win over the reigning champions, Ħamrun Spartans, in the final match held at the National Stadium on Saturday. Despite playing with only ten players for nearly thirty minutes, the Blues proved to be the stronger team. They created more scoring opportunities throughout the ninety-minute game, and it was only towards the end that Ħamrun attempted to make a comeback, managing to narrow the goal difference.
Geoffrey Acheampong opened the scoring for the Wanderers in the 14th minute with a well-placed diagonal shot from the right side that eluded goalkeeper Celio’s reach. Just three minutes into the second half, the Wanderers were awarded a penalty after Joseph Mbong handled the ball inside the penalty area. Murilo Henrique confidently converted the spot-kick, extending Sliema’s lead.
However, Sliema’s task became more challenging when Steve Pisani was shown a red card in the 66th minute for a tackle deemed violent against Daniel Letherby. Reduced to ten men, they had to defend their advantage against an increasingly determined opponent. In the dying moments of added time, Raphael Lopes managed to pull one back for Hamrun with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.
Following the game, Sliema Wanderers were presented with the Summer Cup by Adrian Casha, the Vice-President of the Malta FA.
