Hungary’s forward, Barnabas Varga, has stated that he will be taking “a few weeks off” to recuperate after being discharged from the hospital. Varga suffered a severe injury during the Euro 2024 tournament when he collided with Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, in their Group A match in Stuttgart last Sunday.
After undergoing successful surgery in a German hospital, Varga was released on Wednesday and has since returned home to Hungary to continue his recovery. In a message posted on Ferencvaros’ website, Varga expressed his gratitude for the numerous supportive messages he received and mentioned how good it feels to be back home.

He acknowledged that he will need several weeks of rest before shifting his focus towards his recovery. Reflecting on the incident, Varga stated that he is not the type to get nervous. The Hungarian Football Federation also released a statement confirming Varga’s release from the Stuttgart hospital and his ongoing recovery at home in Hungary.

During Sunday’s match, which Hungary won 1-0, there was a delay of almost seven minutes in the second half as Varga received extensive medical attention. Hungary’s captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, was visibly emotional on the field and later criticized the response time of the medical staff.
