American tennis player Serena Williams played her last match at the tournament in Toronto last night, as she was defeated by Belinda Bencic from Switzerland in the second round with 0:2 in sets 2:6, 4:6.
Williams announced her retirement from her playing career at this year’s US Open with a text in the new edition of Vogue, and this was the first match of the 40-year-old tennis legend since the story became public.
– I have always loved playing here. I’m sorry I didn’t play better, but Belinda played really well today. It’s been an interesting 24 hours. There are a lot of emotions – said Serena Williams in an interview immediately after the match, which was often interrupted by cheers from the stands of the stadium in Toronto.
As I wrote in the text, I’m bad at saying goodbye. But, goodbye Toronto – said the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles through tears.
The next stop on Serena’s farewell tour is in Cincinnati, culminating in a performance at her final US Open, the tournament where she won her first of 23 Grand Slam titles in 1999 as a 17-year-old rising star.
