Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance to defeat American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in the Miami Open final on Saturday, securing her eighth WTA 1000 title. The Belarusian star, known for her relentless power and fierce forehand, left no room for doubt as she triumphed in straight sets.
Having finished as runner-up in Indian Wells earlier this month and at the Australian Open in January, Sabalenka was determined not to settle for second place this time. She sealed victory with a stunning backhand down the line before raising her hands in triumph.

Fourth seed Pegula, eager to avenge her loss to Sabalenka in last year’s US Open final, started strong but struggled to keep up with the world number one’s raw power. The opening set saw three traded breaks before Sabalenka secured the decisive break with a 90-mile-per-hour winner, forcing Pegula into a forehand error on set point.
Pegula managed to break Sabalenka at the start of the second set, but the Belarusian quickly regained control. Despite Pegula’s efforts, frustration set in as she slammed her racket to the court after allowing Sabalenka multiple break points, one of which the Belarusian converted with another pinpoint winner. Sabalenka broke again to close out the match, reinforcing her dominance over Pegula with a 7-2 career head-to-head advantage.
During the trophy ceremony, Pegula lightheartedly acknowledged their recent encounters. “Three finals – really don’t want to like you right now,” she joked. “But you’re the best in the world for a reason.”
Sabalenka, who had never advanced past the Miami Open quarter-finals before, was emotional about her victory. “Thank you to everyone for supporting me every day. I enjoyed playing in front of you,” she told the crowd. She also found humor in the rain delays that had interrupted the final. “It felt like Miami was crying that I won this tournament,” she quipped.

The world number one’s path to the title was flawless—she never dropped a set throughout the tournament, defeating former champion Danielle Collins in the round of 16, Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals, and sixth seed Jasmine Paolini in the semi-finals.
As a reward for her stellar performance, Sabalenka celebrated with a margarita at the Tennis Channel desk, relishing her latest triumph. “With the drink, with the trophy – feel super special,” she said with a smile, capping off a remarkable tournament run that further cemented her status as the world’s top player.
