Dutch player Suzan Lamens was eliminated from the Australian Open after losing in three sets to Anastasia Potapova in the first round.
Lamens was the only Dutch woman in the main draw and was up against Potapova, who is ranked 54th and recently changed her playing nationality from Russia to Austria.
Lamens started strongly, breaking Potapova twice in her first two service games and creating several chances. Potapova fought back in the fourth game, but Lamens won the first set after converting two set points in the ninth game.
The Dutchwoman continued well in the second set and built a 5–1 lead after breaking Potapova three times in a row. However, Potapova then made a remarkable comeback, winning the set 7–5 with 15 winners compared to Lamens’ five.
Potapova’s comeback seemed to affect Lamens, who struggled in the final set. Lamens saved two break points in the opening game, but Potapova broke her three more times and went on to win 6–3, 7–5, 6–2.
