Novak Djokovic announced after it became clear that after Indian Wells he will not even play at the Masters in Miami.
The mandatory vaccination rule for foreigners prevented him from playing on the US tour for the second year in a row, but Novak hopes that rule will be lifted by the time of the US Open.
The Serbian tennis player firmly stands behind his decision, even though it left him without the top spot on the ATP list.
“I don’t regret”, I have learned in my life that regret can only hurt you, and make you live in the past, and I don’t want that. I don’t even want to live too much in the future. I want to be in the present moment as much as possible, but also to think about the future, to create a better future. Congratulations to Alcaraz. “He absolutely deserved to be back at No. 1,” said Djokovic in an interview with CNN.
“It’s a shame I couldn’t play in Indian Wells and Miami, I love those tournaments. I had a lot of success there, but I made a conscious decision and I knew there was a risk of not going there – that’s the way it is at the moment, hopefully, it will change later this year, for the US Open. It’s the most important tournament on American soil for me.”
Novak emphasized again that at this stage of his career, Grand Slam trophies are a priority over all other tournaments. The rule in force in the USA should be abolished in mid-May, and as the US Open has been played since the end of August, there is a good chance that he will play in New York.
“I really want to be in New York.” When I lost to Medvedev in the final in 2021, I experienced one of the best moments with the audience there, I won the US Open three times and played many more finals… Although I lost that duel to Medvedev, I got the love and respect of the audience, I won’t come back and connect with them again. I’m looking forward to that and I hope it will happen,” Djokovic concluded.
