Now that on Sunday the group stage of the European Individual Seniors Snooker Championship category came to an end in Golem, Albania, the list of 40 players who qualified for the Knock Out stage was named. Out of six Maltese players who are taking part, four managed to go through for second phase after playing their last group matches.
Philip Ciantar won both his matches to finish first in group M consequently qualifying directly to the last 32. In the morning he won against Jean-Christophe Margontier (France), 3-1, while later in the afternoon he found little difficulty to defeat Tony Morgan (Wales), 3-0.
Frans Mintoff and Alex Borg won the first game however lost the second one and finished second in their group. Frans Mintoff won against Sergej Korolkov (Lithuania), 3-2, while losing with the same score to Marcin Nitschke (Poland). Alex Borg also finished with two identical scores of 3-0, in the morning he won against Darius Bublys (Lithuania) and late in the evening he lost against Allan Morgan (Wales). Both Frans Mintoff and Alex Borg in the next phase must play in a preliminary match to advance with the last 32.
Arthur Cachia lost his last match after he managed to qualify for the knock out phase on the previous day. He lost with the deciding frame, 3-2, to Stuart Watson (England) who eventually won the group. Cachia classified in the second place but still qualified directly to the round of the last 32.
Tony Mifsud and Ivan Attard, after losing their two matches on the day first day of the competition and mathematically were eliminated, on Sunday both had excellent performances. They both won 3-0 against Bekim Aliu (Albania) and Andrius Ščerbakovasn (Lithuania) respectively.
On Monday this championship continues in an all-important phase. Eight games of the preliminary phase should be played followed by the round of the last 32, the last 16 and even the quarter-finals. The last three matches, the semi-finals and final, will take place on Tuesday. The commitments of the Maltese players in the knock out will now be these:
