Former Malta National Cycling coach Jon Miles passes away at 87

The Malta Cycling Federation announced with deep sorrow that it was in mourning following the death of former national coach Jon Miles, who passed away on Friday at the age of 87 after a brief terminal illness.

Widely known and respected, Miles was remembered as a cooperative and committed figure who made significant contributions to the development of cycling in Malta, with a particular focus on promoting the women’s discipline.

Over the years, he worked closely with the Malta Cycling Federation and the Organising Committee of the Tour of Malta, playing a key role in advancing the sport locally. He was also instrumental in building strong connections between the Federation and his UK-based women’s cycling club, VC Bedford. Through this partnership, he frequently brought British teams to participate in the Tour of Malta.

Miles also served as coach of the Maltese national team and led them during the 2001 Games of the Small States of Europe in San Marino. He remained actively interested in local cycling affairs throughout his life, and regularly invited Maltese cyclists—both women and men—to compete in events in the United Kingdom.

On behalf of the entire Maltese cycling community, the Federation expressed its gratitude to Jon Miles for the inspiration he provided through his lifelong passion for the sport.

The Malta Cycling Federation extended its sincere condolences to the family of Jon Miles.
