Conor McGregor suspended for 18 months by UFC over missed drug tests

Ireland’s Conor McGregor, one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, has been suspended by the UFC for 18 months following three “whereabouts failures” in 2024. Despite never testing positive for banned substances, McGregor missed three scheduled drug tests, a violation of the UFC’s anti-doping policy.

The missed tests occurred on June 13, September 19, and September 20, 2024. Under UFC regulations, fighters are required to provide accurate information about their whereabouts to enable out-of-competition drug testing. McGregor cooperated fully with the investigation, and as a result, the standard two-year suspension was reduced by six months.

The suspension is retroactive and began on September 20, 2024. This means McGregor will be eligible to return to competition on March 20, 2026. This date coincides with the planned UFC event at the White House, scheduled for June 14, 2026 — which is also former President Donald Trump’s birthday. McGregor has expressed interest in participating in the event, which would mark his first fight since July 2021, when he suffered a broken leg in his bout against Dustin Poirier.

Despite the suspension, McGregor remains in the UFC’s anti-doping testing pool and has submitted several samples in 2025. UFC President Dana White has noted that no official discussions have taken place regarding McGregor’s participation in the White House event, with planning for the fight card expected to begin in early 2026.

The suspension has sparked debate within the MMA community. Some fighters, such as Matt Brown, have criticised the sanction and questioned the UFC’s anti-doping procedures, suggesting that wealthier or higher-profile athletes may evade detection.

As McGregor approaches his 38th birthday, this suspension marks his longest period out of the sport. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he returns in 2026 and how he performs following the lengthy absence.
