Team Malta had a fantastic showing at this year’s European Games of Small States, held in Riga, Latvia. Out of four athletes, Malta brought home three medals, a great achievement for local Taekwondo on the international stage.
The team, led by coach Gianluca Barbara, included Alycia Cassar (junior -63kg), Michela Scerri (junior -46kg), Jean Schembri (cadet -41kg), and Luke Chircop (junior -59kg). All four athletes gave strong performances, showing skill, determination, and the fighting spirit that Team Malta is known for.
Gold for Alycia Cassar
Alycia had a brilliant tournament. She beat Oliwia Waszkiewicz from Iceland in the semi-final, staying calm and focused throughout. In the final, she comfortably defeated Haizea Martinez Otermin from Andorra to win the gold medal.
Her sharp technique and confidence clearly showed how much she has grown as an athlete.
Silver for Michela Scerri
Michela won her first match against Amela Nuti from Montenegro with smart tactics and strong attacking play. In the final, she faced another Montenegrin, Tara Sljivancanin. It was a close match, but Michela just missed out, losing 2–0 and earning a well-deserved silver medal.
Her efforts showed great consistency and determination.
Silver for Jean Schembri
Jean had an impressive run, beating athletes from the Faroe Islands and Latvia to reach the final. There, he took on a strong opponent from Armenia. The match was tight, with Jean losing each round by just one point, taking home a silver medal after a solid performance.
Jean showed he can handle pressure well and is continuing to grow on the international stage.
Strong Effort from Luke Chircop
Luke had a tough opening match against San Marino and didn’t progress to the medal rounds. But this was a valuable learning experience at a high level. His focus is now on improving ahead of future tournaments in Croatia and Romania.

A Proud Moment for Maltese Taekwondo
With one gold and two silver medals, this was a fantastic result for Team Malta. More importantly, the team showed great sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination.
The event took place at the International Exhibition Centre in Riga, and the athletes will now look ahead to competing again at the Riga Open G1 in two days’ time.
