The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 8 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 152km long Spoleto-Prati di Tivo. Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) finished second and third respectively.
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “I was not expecting to win at all today. But as a team we rode super well from the beginning. We hit the last climb with a good advantage. Rafal Majka did a great job in the lead out. It’s amazing to win again here at Prati di Tivo. As soon as we survived the first long categorised climb, my team-mates wanted me to go for the stage win. At the bottom of the last climb, when I saw the guys, Felix [Grossschartner] and Rafal were still doing well, I became confident that I could win today. We already saw Dani Martinez doing very good finishes this year, obviously I was thinking of him as my main opponent, but he wasn’t the only one. Antonio Tiberi tried a few times. But I had it more or less under control. I hope it’s a relaxing day tomorrow but the last 50km are tricky so I will have to stay focus till we reach Naples and after that I think it’s a rest day”.
