Joe Bajada re-elected to an important position in the European Cycling Union (UCI)

Joe Bajada, Secretary-General of the Malta Cycling Federation was re-elected for the third consecutive four years term as UCI Voting delegate with 37 votes. This happened last Sunday, 9 March 2025, during the 37th Elective UEC Congress 2025 of the European Union of Cycling at Bratislava, Slovakia.

To this vital post within this European Cycling Union. Over the next four years, he will form part of 15 delegates who will have the right to vote on behalf of the 52 European affiliated countries, during the Annual General Congresses of the International Cycling Federation. With these 15 European delegates, another 30 delegates from the other four confederations, which are ACC (Asia), COPACI (Pan America), CAC (Africa), and the OCC (Oceania) will join them.

In this year’s election, 29 delegates were nominated from different Federations and Associations within the UEC, where 15 were elected as Voting Delegates and another 8 as substitute Delegates. Due to the UEC statute, the first four women and men were elected and Joe Bajada was one of them. The other seven candidates with the most votes joined them. Appointed with Joe Bajada were: Gilles Da Costa (France), Alejandro Martin Garcia (Spain), Camille Dahm (Luxembourg), Livia Hanesova (Slovakia), Jaroslava Krakovcova (Czech Republic), Umberto Langellotti (Monaco), Krzysztof Golwei (Poland), Toni Zoric (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Walter Baldiserra (San Marino), Alfred Tahiraj (Albania), Vanja Banovic (Montenegro), José Luis Ribeiro (Portugal), Kjersti Storset (Norway), and Martin Wolf (Germany).

In this Congress of The Union Européenne de Cyclisme Congress, with the participation of official delegates from 49 of the 51 member federations, confirmed by acclamation the Italian Enrico Della Casa as President for the four-year period 2025-2029. Then, the members of the UEC Management Board were also elected as Vice-Presidents: Katarina Jakubová (Slovakia), Raivo Rand (Estonia), and Georgios Georgiou (Cyprus), Bernd Dankowski (Germany) as Treasurer, and Dafna Lang (Israel) and Sabrina Tsakona Twiss (Greece) as Members.

Confirmed also Alasdair MacLennan (Great Britain) as the UEC General Secretary.

Another election was for the European UCI Management Committee and were elected: Rocco Cattaneo (Switzerland), Agata Lang (Poland), Tom Van Damme (Belgium), Michel Callot (France), Serena Danesi (Italy), José Vicioso Soto (Spain), Katerina Nash (Czechia), Henrik Jess Jensen (Denmark), Emin Muftuoglu (Türkiye) and Pavel Mardonovic (Slovenia).

Visibly pleased with this result, Joe Bajada thanked all those 37 European countries that have once again shown full confidence in him with their vote so that now together with the other 14 delegates they will represent them during the next UCI Congress, scheduled for 25 September 2025 during the UCI Road World Championships in Kigali (Rwanda).

Following this result Joe Bajada said, ‘I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supported my candidacy with their votes and to the Malta Cycling Federation for its continuous efforts to promote and develop cycling in Malta and beyond. Thanks to my colleagues John Zammit and Daniel Borg Olivier for your support and trust. My personal satisfaction is my re-election, which is a testimony to the confidence delegates have shown again in me. Thanks to all National Federations for supporting me again for the position. Honestly it is an immense honor for me. This marks a significant step and I will be looking more forward to further challenges and work for the good of our sport.’ He added that this result reflects his hard work above all; that was noticed and continued to be appreciated even on the international scene.

He dedicated all this to his whole family for the continuous support they always give him. He wished to thank President John Zammit and his colleagues and members of the Malta Cycling Federation, the UEC Officials, particularly new President Enrico Della Casa, and the International Federations that sent him congratulations after this result. He congratulated Enrico Della Casa for the re-election as President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme and his Management Boards. Congratulations also went to his UCI Voting delegates colleagues. Congratulations from his side also went to the well-organized Congress by the Slovak Cycling Federation under the presidency of Peter Privara and the European Cycling Union, and a big thanks to all for your warm hospitality. At the end of his comments on this prestigious result, Joe Bajada said that this is personal satisfaction and success for the Malta Cycling Federation, Malta and Gozo.
