Reynold Hoover, a retired US Army Brigadier General, has been appointed to lead the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, bringing extensive operational expertise to one of the world’s most high-profile and challenging events. Hoover, 68, assumes the role at a critical juncture, with organisers transitioning from planning to execution as the Games approach.
While Hoover lacks direct experience in sports management, his impressive military background, including overseeing complex logistics operations in Afghanistan, has been highlighted as a major asset. LA28 Chairman Casey Wasserman praised Hoover’s ability to handle intricate challenges, stating, “Reynold is one of the few people in the nation with the operational expertise these Games require.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission recently visited Los Angeles to evaluate preparations. With a revised budget of $6.9 billion (€6.5 billion), organisers face significant financial and logistical hurdles, including securing sponsorships, addressing political challenges, and managing public concerns. Both the city and state have pledged $270 million (€255 million) each in case of budget overruns, but the focus remains on generating revenue to minimise taxpayer impact.
Hoover’s collaborative leadership style has already garnered support. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez commended his willingness to address concerns, while LA Mayor Karen Bass highlighted the importance of his experience after their joint attendance at the Paris 2024 Games. However, critics, including the NOlympics LA movement, have voiced apprehensions about his military past and its implications for Los Angeles.
Hoover himself remains pragmatic, emphasising the need for teamwork and delegation. “If you have the person focused on Games delivery worrying about bedsheets in the Olympic Village, then they’re not focused on the right thing,” he told the Los Angeles Times, stressing his complementary partnership with Wasserman.
As challenges such as financing, infrastructure development, and sustainability loom, Hoover faces a monumental task in delivering a successful LA28. Both the Olympics and Paralympics will kick off in July 2028, with ceremonies at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. The world will be watching as Hoover and his team navigate the path to the Games.
