Mqabba secured their place in the National Amateur League 1 after earning the crucial point they needed in a goalless draw against Kalkara United during the IZIBET Amateur League 2 Play-Offs at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.
Going into the match, Mqabba required just a draw to confirm their promotion, and they managed to hold off Kalkara to achieve their objective. Despite the lack of goals, the match was an intense battle, with both sides pushing for a breakthrough. However, Mqabba’s disciplined defense ensured they got the result they needed to take the step up to the next tier of Maltese football.
Victoria Hotspurs End Season on a High
Meanwhile, Victoria Hotspurs, who had already secured the Amateur League 2 title, capped off their impressive campaign with a 3-0 victory over St. George’s.
Veteran midfielder Roderick Briffa opened the scoring just before halftime, giving the Hotspurs a crucial lead in the 43rd minute. The advantage doubled in the 57th minute, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal from St. George’s. The win was sealed in the 73rd minute when Ferdinando Apap found the net, ensuring a dominant finish for the champions.
With this result, Victoria Hotspurs reaffirmed their superiority in the division, while Mqabba’s promotion adds another layer of excitement as they prepare to compete at a higher level next season.
