Maltese Formula 4 driver Jacob Micallef celebrated a major milestone in his young career after clinching his first F4 podium during Round 2 of the Spanish Winter Championship at the Circuito de Jarama.

Just one week after making his Formula 4 debut at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Micallef arrived in Madrid determined to build on his initial experience and continue his rapid adaptation to single-seater racing.
Friday’s free practice sessions showed encouraging pace, although the Maltese driver worked intensively to adapt to varying grip levels and refine his car setup. Saturday’s qualifying session proved more demanding, with changing track conditions limiting his ability to extract the maximum performance.
Race 1 was disrupted by multiple Safety Car periods, turning into a chaotic contest. Micallef faced challenging handling conditions but remained composed, defending strongly and gaining crucial race experience in tight battles.
The Sprint Race later that day underlined his development. Improved reaction times and sharper execution in the opening laps allowed him to settle into a competitive rhythm and close the gap to the cars ahead, signalling growing confidence.
Sunday presented another challenge as traffic in qualifying restricted him to P12 on the grid. However, the final race offered redemption. Following an early red flag and further Safety Car interruptions, Micallef capitalised on every opportunity, executing decisive overtakes and maintaining consistency under pressure.
He initially crossed the line in sixth position overall and second in the Rookie classification. Post-race penalties for other competitors promoted him to fifth place overall, officially securing his first Formula 4 podium, a remarkable achievement just a week after his debut in Portimão.
Reflecting on the weekend, Micallef described the result as a significant step forward, noting how his driving and racecraft improved session by session. He emphasised the confidence gained from Race 2 and confirmed that preparations would now continue at the factory, focusing on simulator work and physical conditioning ahead of the next event.
His manager, Simon, highlighted the transformation across the weekend, describing the difference between Friday and Sunday as substantial. He praised the structured support around Micallef, including coaching from Theo Micouris and the SECTR staff, stressing that creating the right environment was instrumental in unlocking performance. While acknowledging there is still work to be done, he underlined that the Winter Series serves as key preparation for the main championship campaign.
Micallef will now turn his attention to the final round of the Spanish Winter Series at MotorLand Aragón between 13 and 15 March, as he continues his development ahead of the full championship season.
