The hunt continues this weekend for the last two remaining Quarter Final berths in the women’s Champions League – and securing the top spots is also on the menu in the penultimate round of the Group Stage.
Group A
(Local times shown)
12.30 Dunaujvaros WPC (HUN) v Vouliagmeni NC (GRE)
18.00 CN Terrassa (ESP) v Astralpool CN Sabadell (ESP)
Standings: 1. Sabadell 12, 2. Vouliagmeni 9, 3. Terrassa 2, 4. Dunaujvaros 1
Sabadell and Vouliagmeni have already completed the most important task – to qualify for the Quarter Finals. Finishing first is their next challenge and Sabadell are in pole position to achieve that.
They don’t have to travel far to clear the next hurdle, in Terrassa, while Vouliagmeni will have to produce their best to down Dunaujvaros, who should provide tough opposition, even though they don’t have any chance to progress.
Group B
(Local times shown)
19.30 Polar Bears (NED) v Antenore Plebiscito Padova (ITA)
19.30 FTC Telekom Waterpolo (HUN) v Assolim CN Mataro (ESP)
Standings: 1. FTC 12, 2. Mataro 9, 3. Padova 3, 4. Polar Bears 0
Officially, Mataro haven’t been declared as a qualified team yet, but it’s hard to see the Spaniards missing out on a place in the last eight. They would have to lose both their remaining ties, plus, in Padova, the Italians would need to beat them by eight goals or more to turn everything upside down.
That’s also providing Padova come away with all three points from Ede this Saturday, which is anything but guaranteed.
Mataro will also aim to collect points in Budapest this weekend, as they had a really close battle with FTC in Spain on day two, so maybe it’s time for them to take their revenge.
Fradi won that battle 13-11, so a three-goal victory for Mataro would mean they can even finish top in this group, though the Hungarians are also determined to keep their perfect record.
Group C
(Local times shown)
16.00 GZC Donk (NED) v Olympiacos SFP (GRE)
18.00 Alimos NAC Betsson (GRE) v SIS Roma (ITA)
Standings: 1. Olympiacos 12, 2. Donk 6, 3. Roma 4, 4. Alimos 2
Olympiacos have not only qualified, but they are also the only team in the field to have cemented first place in their group.
At the same time, the other three sides will stage a neck-and-neck race to secure the runners-up position.
A win for Alimos over Roma would put them back on track in the hunt for a Quarter Final berth. Donk, meanwhile, will be looking to cause an upset at home against Olympiacos.
Group D
(Local times shown)
15.00 Orizzonte Catania (ITA) v BVSC-Manna ABC (HUN)
17.00 CN Sant Andreu (ESP) v UVSE-Helia D (HUN)
Standings: 1. St Andreu 12, 2. Orizzonte 9, 3. UVSE 3, 4. BVSC 0
Only the top spot is at stake in this group, and last season’s Final Four bronze medallists St Andreu are the frontrunners in this duel.
Still, they need to be cautious against UVSE, as the Hungarians gave them a tough time in Budapest.
Another win should be enough for St Andreu to secure the top spot, as Orizzonte, who are expected to bag three more points at home against BVSC, would need a seven-goal win in the last round to overtake the Spaniards
