Swieqi Phoenix Nium, the reigning champions, defeated Birkirkara 3-0 to win the John Bugeja Cup, a preseason competition organized by the Malta Volleyball Association. Paola Executive Security finished second, after winning against the same team last week.
Meanwhile, on Sunday at the same sports complex in Kottonera, the First Division championship began. Led by Michael Magro and assisted by Antonio Borg, Paola Executive Security started the season strong with a 3-0 victory against Swieqi Challengers.
In another match from the same competition, Birkirkara Reds had to work hard to beat Depiro 3-2.
