Birżebbuġa Sailing Club Freeport has written a new chapter in Maltese sailing after being crowned Best Club of 2026 at the 44th edition of the Lake Garda Meeting.
The achievement marks a historic milestone for the local club, which produced an outstanding collective performance against a fleet of more than 1,000 sailors from around the world.

Birżebbuġa Sailing Club delivered impressive consistency throughout the event, with seven of its 10 sailors qualifying for the highly competitive Gold Fleet. The remaining sailors competed in the Silver, Bronze and Emerald Fleets, underlining the club’s depth and overall strength across the team.
It is the first time that a Maltese sailing club has claimed the Best Club title at the Lake Garda Meeting, a prestigious honour contested by leading sailing clubs from across the globe.

Reacting to the achievement, club commodore Mario Aquilina said the result was a reflection of the dedication and unity shown by the sailors, coaches and support staff throughout the event.
He described competing at such a high level as an accomplishment in itself, while adding that finishing as the top club made the result even more remarkable.
The success once again highlights Birżebbuġa Sailing Club’s commitment to youth sailing development and further strengthens Malta’s growing reputation on the international sailing scene.
The club’s historic triumph is also expected to serve as inspiration for the next generation of sailors, reinforcing its position as one of the leading forces in both Maltese and international sailing.
