Maltese Federation of Cycling holds the awards night

The Annual Awards Presentation organized by the Maltese Federation of Cycling was held recently, where all the cyclists who achieved success during this season were awarded in various categories.

The Team Greens were also awarded the Elite Aggregate Cup and the Overall Aggregate Cup. The ceremony was officiated by the high officials of the Maltese Federation of Cycling, John Zammit and Daniel Borg Olivier, president and treasurer respectively, as well as by Hon David Agius, the Sports Spokesperson from the opposition, and the former president of the Maltese Cycling Association, Josie Lanfranco. The Secretary General of the Federation, Joe Bajada, presented the evening.

The highlight of the evening was the induction of Josie Lanfranco into the Hall of Fame of the Federation, as the first person to be inducted. President John Zammit gave a speech in which he mentioned the difficulties faced in obtaining the necessary permissions to organize the races, but despite that, they managed to hold six races associated with our championships and apart from some successes, the most satisfying was that no one was injured. He also said that they are providing this service to see how cycling continues to grow in all its levels and this is our satisfaction. Therefore, he congratulated everyone for their hard work. He also congratulated Joe Bajada, the Secretary General of the Federation, who recently won the National Sportsmanship Award 2024 organized by the Ministry of Health and Active Aging.

He said that this evening is a special one, because for the first time in history, the Federation will induct the first person into its Hall of Fame and no one is more deserving than the first president of the Maltese Cycling Association, who is now 90 years old. Zammit learnt a lot from Mr. Lanfranco.

He ended his speech by thanking all the clubs and officials for their cooperation during the season, both in the Federation races and during the Tour of Malta. He also thanked the MBX Maltese Federation for giving them their place to hold this evening, as well as to Chalane Nick Catania (Dj Shmacxx) for his service.

In his message, Josie Lanfranco mentioned that this was a great surprise for him, because all these years in the field of cycling, he always did it for the love he has for the sport. He also appealed to everyone not to lose heart and to continue their training so that they can keep the level high and thus guarantee the future of cycling in our country. He also said that he is still pedaling at the age of 85, but stopped due to his heart, because he was going to get hit by a car and decided to stop so as not to worry his family. Finally, he wished everyone a lot of success.

The last speech was given by the Maltese National Champion Aidan Buttigieg, who successfully defended the title in both the Elite Category. He started by thanking the Federation for all the hard work it is not easy to organize these races again. He said he is very grateful to the Federation, which gave him the opportunity to continue in Malta, as well as to his team Għawdxi, D Sports Lab, who were very helpful during all the difficult winter months we are experiencing in our islands.

Finally, the Maltese Cycling Federation shows its appreciation for all the cyclists and club officials for their participation during this season, as well as to the ARRTs Timing System for their great work. A special thanks also goes to the respective services of the Local Councils, Transport Malta, the Police, LESA, and the Emergency First Response, as well as to the volunteers, timekeepers, and marshals.
