Pembroke Athleta Athletics & Triathlon Club enjoyed a spectacular weekend at the 2025 London Indoor Games, held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre. The club’s young athletes, competing in U13, U15, and U17 categories, achieved extraordinary success by setting nine new National Records, showcasing their talent and determination on an international stage.
Outstanding Performances Across Disciplines
The competition featured remarkable performances from Pembroke Athleta athletes:
- Jacques Borg set a new National Indoor record in the U17 60m sprint, winning with a time of 7.27 seconds.
- Jack Borg Pullicino established a new National Indoor record for U16 in the 400m, finishing in 54.46 seconds.
- Karina Mia Peresso broke the U14 Girls’ National Indoor record in the 800m with a time of 2:32.38, securing third place in her heat.
- Jack Herrera Role dominated the U14 Boys’ 800m, setting a new National Record with a time of 2:32.94.
- Sophie Cassar Torregiani delivered a strong performance in the U16 Girls’ 800m, finishing third in her heat with a time of 2:31.17, a new National Record for her category.
- Carl Grech improved his own National Indoor record in the U16 Boys’ High Jump, clearing 1.60m—a 5cm increase over his previous record set at the same venue last year. Carl Grech placed first in Group 2.
Additionally, guest athlete Jamie Borg, who has been training with Pembroke Athleta over the past year, delivered a historic performance:
- Jamie broke the U14 Boys’ National Indoor record in the 60m twice in one day, clocking 8.05 seconds in the first round and improving to 8.04 seconds shortly after.
- He capped off the weekend by setting a new National Indoor record for U14 Boys in the 200m with an impressive time of 27.18 seconds.
A Memorable weekend
Under the leadership of Angie Spiteri, along with coaches Luca Falzon, Maria Ghigo, and Ian Paul Grech, the 42 athletes from Pembroke Athleta, supported by a dedicated group of parents and relatives, delivered outstanding performances.
Ms. Spiteri stated: “The London Indoor Youth Games continue to be an important platform for our young stars. Our athletes have shown exceptional determination and talent, and their results are a testament to everyone’s hard work. We are also proud of Jamie Borg’s performance, which highlights a bright future for Maltese athletics.”
