Luke Micallef and Lisa Bezzina celebrated their first victories in the Athletics Malta National Road Running League series, winning the 10km race and taking an early lead in the new six-race format. The two Pembroke athletes showcased impressive performances on a slightly windy yet sunny afternoon along the newly-certified route in Attard and Ta’ Qali.
Micallef crossed the finish line in 31:21, outpacing defending road running league champion Dillon Cassar of Mellieħa AC, who finished second in 32:01, followed closely by Aidan Tanti from Evolve, also at 32:01.
In the women’s race, Lisa Bezzina, a former national champion from two seasons ago, claimed victory in 40:35, ahead of Josann Attard Pulis from Blaze SC (41:09), while Pembroke’s Rosalie Borg secured third place with a time of 41:27.
Hosted by Pembroke Athleta, the 10km race aimed to raise awareness for mental health. For the 2024-2025 season, the national association is partnering with local clubs to organize several road running league events. The next two races, both 5km, will be held by Evolve Endurance Club in Ta’ Xbiex and Rush AC in Safi on November 17 and December 1, respectively.
Despite Micallef’s win, Mellieħa AC’s overall performance has placed them at the top of the Clubs leaderboard, followed by Żurrieq Wolves and Evolve Endurance Club. In the women’s standings, Pembroke’s two podium finishes have secured their top spot ahead of Żurrieq Wolves and Mellieħa AC.
