MD 6 complete in Assikura Women’s League as action returns next week

Mġarr United continued their remarkable start to the Assikura Women’s League season, claiming a sixth consecutive victory to open a six-point gap at the top of the standings.

The Greens defeated reigning champions Swieqi United 3-1. Swieqi initially took the lead when Sara Saliba converted a penalty shortly after the half hour mark. However, Mġarr responded after the break with three unanswered goals. Amber Grech levelled the scores before Valeria Villegas and Alejandra Villegas each found the net to secure the win.

Hibernians strengthened their position in second place with a 3-0 victory over San Ġwann. Uganda international Sylvia Kabene starred for the Paolites, scoring a hat trick on her debut. Before the match, club captain Nicole Sciberras was honoured for her 100th appearance in domestic competitions.

Birkirkara also enjoyed a comfortable win, defeating Valletta 6-0. Japanese forward Momo Ueda scored a hat trick, while goals from Marilena Cardona and Shara Farrugia completed the rout. The Stripes are now on nine points following their third win of the season.

After six rounds, the league standings read as follows: Mġarr United 18 points; Swieqi United and Hibernians 12; Birkirkara 9; San Ġwann and Valletta 1.

The Assikura Women’s League returns on Thursday 16th October with Birkirkara taking on Hibernians at the Centenary Stadium. Both teams will be aiming to reduce the gap on league leaders Mġarr United as the competition reaches a crucial stage.

On Friday 17th October, San Ġwann face Swieqi United at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Ħamrun. Swieqi will be looking to bounce back from their recent defeat, while San Ġwann will be hoping to secure their first victory of the season.

Mġarr United will conclude the week’s fixtures on Saturday 18th October against Valletta at the Dingli Ground. The league leaders will aim to maintain their perfect start, while Valletta continue their search for a first win this season.

The upcoming round of matches promises an exciting week as the top teams seek to consolidate their positions and the lower placed sides look to close the gap in the standings.
