Valletta FC player Steve Borg has been honoured with the Fair Play Award for the July to September 2025 period, acknowledging an outstanding act of sportsmanship during the opening match of the YoHealth Malta Premier League.
The award, issued quarterly by the Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) and the Malta Fair Play Movement, celebrates individuals or teams who demonstrate integrity and respect during sporting competition.

Borg’s gesture took place moments after the final whistle of the league’s inaugural match on 16 August between Valletta and Birkirkara. While most players turned to celebrate, the veteran defender sprinted towards two Birkirkara players who had collided heavily in the final action of the match. His immediate concern for the welfare of his opponents, rather than joining his own supporters, earned wide praise across Maltese football circles.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in St Julian’s, Edward Licari praised Borg’s conduct, noting that his action “perfectly reflects the core values of fair play and respect that sport should represent.” The Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by its Vice-President, Paul Cachia.
