Sports Federations meet for MOC seminar on improvement and teamwork

The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) recently held a seminar that brought together representatives from over 30 national sports federations and associations for a morning of informative discussions and shared learning.

The event began with a session on how to submit financial claims, delivered by MOC Accounts Executive Elaine Catania and Director of Finance Jo’Anne Cassar. They provided practical advice on how to make the process more efficient, explained what documents are needed, and stressed the importance of following financial rules. The goal is to help national sports bodies work more transparently and efficiently when applying for funding.

Following this, Adrian Farrugia, National Director of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Malta, spoke about how the programme helps young people build confidence, learn new skills, stay active, and get involved in volunteering. He encouraged sports organisations to promote the Award among their members. A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed to strengthen future cooperation between the two organisations.

MOC Secretary General Kevin Azzopardi then presented the results of a recent survey carried out among national federations. The findings showed that over the past three years, many federations have made significant improvements in good governance, such as introducing rules around safeguarding, gender balance, and sport integrity. The survey also noted an increase in the number of qualified coaches. However, female participation, both as athletes and in leadership roles, is still relatively low – although more girls and young women are getting involved at junior levels.

The seminar continued with a series of case studies, where representatives from different sports federations shared their experiences and best practices. Speakers included Karl Izzo from the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, Jan Karl Farrugia from the Malta Tennis and Padel Federation, Anna Vassallo from the Malta Taekwondo Association, and Chris Munz from the Malta Baseball and Softball Association.

Julian Pace Bonello, President of the Maltese Olympic Committee, said the seminar was a great example of the local sports community coming together. He highlighted how sharing knowledge, addressing challenges, and celebrating successes helps to build a more united and better-governed sports environment in Malta.
