Kenya’s Humphrey Kayange, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and former rugby sevens star, has been appointed Chair of the Coordination Commission for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
Kayange succeeds Kirsty Coventry, who stepped down after her election as IOC President earlier this year. His appointment was made by current IOC President Thomas Bach, following a recommendation from Coventry herself.
Known for his distinguished rugby career, Kayange captained Kenya’s sevens team to their historic victory at the Singapore Sevens in 2016 and also competed at the Rio Olympics the same year. His outstanding leadership led to his induction into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2023.
Kayange joined the IOC Athletes’ Commission in 2021 and has served on the Dakar 2026 Coordination Commission since 2022. His extensive experience includes roles with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Kenya Rugby Union, and the Kenya Academy of Sports.
In his new role, Kayange will oversee preparations for the Dakar Games, working closely with Olympic bodies, international federations, local organisers, and stakeholders. This will be the first Olympic event ever held on African soil.
Speaking about his new position, Kayange said: “My vision is driven by empowering young athletes. I’m honoured to serve the Olympic Movement and help provide a platform for young people to pursue excellence. Dakar 2026 will unite young athletes from around the world, celebrating African innovation and the Olympic spirit.”
Kayange’s first major task as Chair will be leading the Coordination Commission meeting in Dakar, Senegal, on 7-8 May, attended by IOC President-elect Kirsty Coventry.
The Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 will run for two weeks starting 31 October, featuring top young athletes aged up to 17 across three host venues—Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.
