This past weekend saw the return of the Bi-Annual Hyrox: The Challenge Malta, a three-day endurance and fitness spectacle held at Campus Hub, Msida, organised by The Jungle Box, Warehouse, and Garmin Malta. With more than 1,000 athletes competing between Friday 4th April and Sunday 6th April, the event solidified its place as one of Malta’s premier functional fitness competitions.
Pro Athletes set the tone on day one
Friday was dedicated to the elite competitors in the Men’s and Women’s Pro categories, and it did not disappoint. In the Men’s Pro race, Jean Claude Faenza delivered a dominant performance, finishing with a stunning time of 59:34, the only male athlete to complete the course in under an hour.
In the Women’s Pro division, it was Dzintra Grech who took the spotlight. She powered through the intense circuit to finish with an impressive time of 1:06:00, finishing well ahead of her five fellow competitors.
Doubles and relays show promising timings
Saturday’s competition focused on the Doubles categories, drawing major excitement from spectators as teams competed shoulder-to-shoulder across the grueling circuit.
In the Men’s Doubles, team Burpees Biss (Team 44) surged ahead to claim top spot, completing the course in a rapid 52:58.
The Women’s Doubles saw team Sore & Tired (Team 26) live up to the Hyrox challenge, finishing strong at 59:16.
In the Mixed Doubles category, team DNFs (Team 79) proved unbeatable, racing through the course in just 55 minutes, an exceptional time that secured them the top podium finish.
Sunday rounded off the competition with a packed schedule featuring Open and Relay categories, highlighting both individual brilliance and team synergy.
Borg Cauchi and Ellul win the Open
In the Women’s Open, Rosalie Borg Cauchi blazed through the course with a fantastic time of 1:04:00, while in the Men’s Open, Matthew Ellul emerged as the fastest, clocking in at 1:02:00.
The team categories delivered explosive performances. In the Men’s Relay, the squad featuring Tyler Hunt, Mark Caruana, Allister Camilleri, and Antoine Magri crushed the course in a blistering 51:44.On the women’s side, the team of Vanessa Borg, Charlene Parascandolo, Leanne Sciberras, and Louise Pisani claimed first place with a time of 1:03:58.
The Invitational Relay featured a standout mixed team performance from Mark Caruana, Alister Camilleri, Michelle Vella, and Leanne Sciberras, who stormed to victory in 53:25.
The high-intensity competition brought together athletes from all over the island and beyond, pushing their limits through a series of demanding Hyrox events combining running with functional strength challenges. Importantly, the event also had a charitable edge, with a remarkable €60,000 in proceeds donated to the Inspire Foundation, supporting individuals with disabilities in Malta.
