In the only match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium today, Ħamrun Spartans host Gżira United as the YoHealth Malta Premier League Closing Round continues, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00pm.
The encounter brings together two sides that have started the Closing Round in positive fashion, with Ħamrun looking to build on their strong Opening Round campaign and Gżira aiming to extend their impressive recent run of results.
Ħamrun Spartans enter the fixture as Opening Round champions, having finished top of the standings with 34 points from 16 matches. Giacomo Modica’s side recorded 10 wins, four draws and just two defeats, underlining their consistency across the first phase of the season. That form has largely carried into the Closing Round, where the Spartans remain unbeaten with two wins and one draw, collecting seven points from a possible nine.
The Spartans have also impressed in recent weeks with a solid defensive run, keeping two consecutive clean sheets, while stretching their unbeaten league streak to six matches. In attack, they have spread the goals well, with Matias Nicolas Garcia, Joseph Mbong and N’Dri Koffi leading the way on four goals each in league play.
Gżira United, meanwhile, have quietly built momentum after a mixed Opening Round that saw them play in the Bottom 6 finishing 2nd with 22 points. Darren Abdilla’s men have responded strongly in the Closing Round, recording three wins from their opening three matches, including victories over Marsaxlokk, Birkirkara and Tarxien Rainbows.
The Maroons arrive in confident mood, having won three consecutive league matches and scored in each of their last three outings. Key attacking threats include Johan Josue Bonilla Calderon and Andre Penha Da Costa, both joint top scorers for Gżira with six league goals, while Bonilla also leads the side’s assist charts.
This will be the second league meeting between the two sides this season, after their Opening Round encounter ended in a goalless draw. Historically, Ħamrun have enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture, winning six of the last ten league meetings, although Gżira have proven capable of frustrating the Spartans, particularly in tight encounters.
Both teams will have to cope with key absences, with Ognjen Bjelicic suspended for Ħamrun, while Fabricio Silva Virgens and Mihajlo Stonajovic are unavailable for Gżira. Discipline could again play a role, with several Ħamrun players walking a suspension tightrope on three yellow cards.
The match also marks the first coaching meeting between Giacomo Modica and Darren Abdilla, adding another layer of intrigue to an already competitive fixture. With both sides in good form and aiming to assert themselves early in the Closing Round, an intense and finely balanced contest is expected under the lights at Victor Tedesco Stadium.
