Sliema target third place as Naxxar look to strike on the break

Sliema Wanderers can move into third place level with Hibernians if they beat Naxxar Lions on Sunday. A victory would mark back-to-back league wins and could signal a real swing in momentum following their midweek derby success against Gżira. Earlier this season, the Blues were punished for late lapses in 1-1 draws with Birkirkara and Valletta, so game management will be central with a meeting against reigning champions Ħamrun Spartans up next.

Sliema are expected to take the initiative, use width and pin Naxxar deep for long spells. Their front line has consistently carried a threat when supplied quickly into space, while the midfield has the range to switch play and create angles for cutbacks. The supply line should run through Roko Prsa, captain Steve Pisani and Brazilian midfielder Miguel Baggio, a trio whose tempo control, passing quality and set-piece delivery can unlock a low block and release runners into the channels. Turning territory into clear chances and maintaining focus through the closing minutes will be essential, as will discipline at defensive restarts where they have unsettled opponents this season.

Naxxar sit at the foot of the table with one point and come into this after defeats to Tarxien, Hibernians and Birkirkara, but their route to a result is clear. They will rely on fast transitions, with Brazilian forwards Firminio and Bianano providing direct running, pace and a focal point on the break. If Naxxar can force turnovers, win second balls and find the first forward pass cleanly, that pairing has the tools to carry them up the pitch, draw fouls and create the kind of open field chances that can change the rhythm of the match.

Key battlegrounds are clear. If Sliema circulate the ball fast enough to drag Naxxar from side to side, space should open for late midfield arrivals and low deliveries across the six-yard area. Any loose passing around halfway will invite Naxxar to spring forward, where a direct outlet and willing runners can test Sliema’s recovery pace. Set pieces may also prove decisive, with both teams carrying aerial presence and rehearsed routines from corners and wide free kicks.

Form and confidence point towards Sliema, but the margins have been thin across the early rounds. If Naxxar show resilience and punish any lapses, they have a route to a result. For the Blues, a professional performance and a clean sheet would deliver the points and build the platform they want before facing Ħamrun.
