Hibernians claimed victory over Tarxien Rainbows in the ‘Derby of the South’, securing a one-goal win against their neighbouring rivals. The result allowed the Paolites to strengthen their position in the Bottom 6 standings, joining Gżira United at the top.
The match featured an intense first half, with both teams appearing to score, only for the goals to be overturned following consultations with the Football Video Support system by referee Fyodor Zammit. Hibernians thought they had taken the lead in the 12th minute when Lucas Villela tapped the ball home from close range. The goal was disallowed after video review showed an infringement in the build-up.
Tarxien Rainbows faced a similar disappointment on 24 minutes. Alexandre de Barros headed a cross from Claudio Henrique into the net, but the goal was annulled for an offside position. Both teams continued to create chances, but the first half ended goalless.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 57th minute when Hibernians midfielder Cleiton scored with a precise shot past Tarxien goalkeeper Miguel Spiteri. The goal proved decisive as the Paolites held on to claim all three points.
The win marked an important result for Hibernians, allowing them to assert local supremacy while maintaining a competitive position in the Bottom 6 group. The match was marked by its intensity, the use of video technology, and closely contested play throughout.
